FAQs

For Participants/Potential Participants:

When is the course?

Course S2-662-18-3 is a 6-day format course.  Participants are expected to arrive Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, for check-in and medical recheck by Philmont medical staff.  The course will be held Sept. 23-28, 2018.

What does the course cost?

The individual fee for attending Wood Badge includes all your meals, course materials, a Wood Badge T-shirt and those coveted Wood Badge beads. Additionally, this course also includes use of any equipment you will need to be successful in the backcountry.  Click here for the PDF application form. Travel expenses to and from Philmont are NOT included.  There will be a voluntary pre-course meeting for participants.  This would be a perfect time to coordinate travel with other participants you may know.

What medical form(s) do I need?

All participants and staff have a valid Annual Health and Medical Record that is suitable to the backcountry experience at Philmont.  A new form and format for Health and Medical Records was rolled out nationally March 1, 2014.  You are encouraged to send the new form to your doctor/healthcare provider and ask him/her to review the Philmont-specific Risk Advisory.  Those who do not have a valid Medical Record, please use the new PDF form found here.

If you would like to review the changes made to all the Annual Health and Medical Record forms, please go here.

Are the height and weight requirements pretty rigid?

Yes.  Due to the strenuous nature of the backcountry, height, weight and blood pressure, among other things, are monitored closely.  Anyone not conforming to the acceptable height/weight, or with elevated blood pressure beyond what the medical staff deems acceptable, will not be allowed to participate.  Here is the chart:

Where do I sleep?

Participants will spend their nights outdoors in the Philmont backcountry.  Everyone will be in a den/patrol setting.  LImited camping gear will be required.  If you do not have gear, please let the staff member who contacts you know so we can get you a list of gear to check out from Philmont.

The course ends late in the day on Sept. 28, 2018.  Can I spend the night at Philmont or do I have to leave as soon as the course is over?

The health and safety of our participants and staff is first and foremost.  Anyone who wishes to spend the night at Philmont Training Center the night of Sept. 28 is welcome.  We just need to give the wonderful staff at PTC a heads-up.  There is no additional cost for staying at PTC the night of Sept. 28, 2018.

How will it help me?

Wood Badge will teach you outdoor skills and leadership techniques in a ‘living,’ hands-on environment, and you will be able to apply all you learn to your Scouting involvement and your personal life. You’ll develop a Ticket, which is a written agreement outlining how you will apply your newly learned skills as you continue your involvement in Scouting. Development of your Ticket is an exercise in goal-setting and includes creating a personal vision and mission statement and outlining individual steps to personal success.

How do I get my beads?

You’re probably seen other Scouters wearing their Wood Badge beads. When you success-fully complete your Ticket, some of your Wood Badge staff members will present you with your Wood Badge beads, a tan neckerchief with the famed MacLaren tartan, a leather ‘woggle’ (neckerchief slide) and a special Wood Badge certificate.

For Employers:

Wood Badge is the highest and most advanced training course offered by the Boy Scouts of America.  While it is rich in scouting history and tradition, participants will spend 6 full days and nights learning modern leadership theories from contemporary scholars such as Ken Blanchard (author of the One Minute Manager series of books), Stephen R. Covey (author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and Principle-Centered Leadership), and Spencer Johnson (author of Who Moved My Cheese).  A complete set of references can be found at the end of this document.

Dr. Blanchard’s courses and workshops, offered through The Ken Blanchard Companies, run $500 per day ($3000 for 6 days).  The Boy Scouts of America have negotiated royalty fees and intellectual property rights which allows them to offer the entire 6-day course for just for considerably less.

Leaders at many companies (such as IBM, Motorola, and Intel) have recognized the value this training is to their employees.  As such, many agree to pay the course fees and/or give time off as part of their employee’s professional development and training plan.  Individual company policies vary, however.  If you would like additional information, please feel free to contact our Course Director, Bob McKinley, or  the Longhorn Council, Boy Scouts of America, at (817) 231-8500.
